The Art of Effective Translation
Assuming
you know which language markets you wish to target, (and we can
also help out there), let's look at the translation process. Translation
is a tricky business. Words alone carry only a limited meaning;
it is words in context and in conjunction with one another that
allow humans to communicate with such depth and breadth. No doubt
you have spent a considerable amount of time designing and constructing
your marketing materials to ensure you get across exactly the right
nuances to your audience. Maintaining that throughout the translations
you request is our aim.
To
ensure we provide the best possible translation we use a three step
process. The first step involves a review of all your promotional
material (not just website) to get a general feel for your copy
style. We may even identify particular aspects of your product or
service that may be more appealing in some markets than others (and
vice versa). We then do a first cut translation. This first cut
is then passed on to a second translator for consultation and copywriting.
If you already have contacts in that market you may want to get
their feedback as well at this stage. This is not just a syntax
and grammar check; it ensures that the feel of the content is exactly
the way it should be in terms of your product or service and how
it should be presented in that market.

When
this has been completed the actual web pages are created. Actual
web page creation can range from a direct mapping of an existing
website across to a new language, through to a customized construction
specific to the target language. In most cases we are able to maintain
consistency with your existing website (if applicable), but on occasion
may need to make cosmetic changes due to the variation in total
length of text due to use of different language/characters.
When
the web pages are ready to be loaded it goes through to a third
translator for a final proofreading and an image check. Here we
are looking for the obvious (typos etc.) as well as how the overall
site looks and feels within the cultural context of the target market.
Particular images may need to be changed or altered, colours adapted
to what is popular in the target market at the time etc. etc.
So
now you have your website in the language of your choice. Now you
have to get them the traffic they need in order to make a return.
